“The 48th Asian Bodybuilding and Fitness Championship 2014 will be held in Colombo from June 19 to 22 with the participation of 220 competitors from 29 countries.
Before the main international event, there will be several promotion campaigns to boost the image of this massive project, walk Fit N’ Fun 2014 – a walk covering all districts in the island being the first program to start from March 10.
This was revealed at a press conference held at Kingsbury Hotel ball room on Thursday under the patronage of Minister of Sports Mahindananda Aluthgamage and with the participation of Asian Federation of Body Building and Fitness ( AFBB ) assistant general secretary Tariq Ali Omer Ahmed of Baharain.
Minister Aluthgamage addressing the gathering thanked the AFBB for granting the tournament to Sri Lanka and assured the ministry’s best support to make the event a success. He also noted that it is common to have various parties with different views in any sports body but to achieve target and to develop the sport a united effort is a must.
He requested the SLBBFF president to get the support of all parties to spread the sport throughout the island. The minister also explained the importance of initiating new sports clubs in this aspect.
Speaking on the occasion Sri Lanka Body Building and Fitness Federaton (SLBBFF ) president K H Kapila Kumara said that after 32 years the event is hosted by Sri Lanka and it is a great achievement by SLBBFF with the support of the sports minister.
‘We faced with many obstacles but our association worked hard to bring the event to Sri Lanka this year he added. As per the minister’s guidance we hope to increase the number of clubs in the island and open doors for the new comers to take part’, he said. AFBB assistant general secretary Tariq Ali expressed their satisfaction over the preparation for the event by Sri Lanka. ‘I had a closer look at the plans and arrangements by the SLBBFF as the host country and it is commendable. From the AFBB point of view we are satisfied with the support and involvement from the sports ministry as well’, he added.
The walk will commence on March 10 and continue for 25 days across all districts in the island and will reach Hyde Park in Colombo on April 3. Everyday during this period there will be a fitness camp in the main town of the district which the walk will proceed through.
At present there are 130 body builders in the national training pool where four of them are engaged abroad training who will try their best to bring credit to the country in the upcoming event.”
