The Kurdish bodybuilder from Zakho town, Nazeer Ali Abdi, is currently undergoing intensive training sessions preparing for the World Bodybuilding championship which is planned to be held in Greece in June.

?I was selected to take part at the competition after I was placed first at the Kurdistan Bodybuilding championship. What I intend is to go to Greece and get a good result in order to raise Kurdish flag,? said Abdi

Abdi said he has to prepare well as he known he will have many rivals due to participating strong competitors from other countries.

He also paid his tribute to Zakho Sports club for supporting him. He hoped everybody will morally support him in order he can obtain a food result at the tournament.

Kurdish men’s growing preoccupation with physical fitness and bodybuilding is fueling an explosion of gyms in the region, from gleaming, state-of-the-art health centers to clunky, alleyway weight rooms.

Just two decades ago there were only three gyms in the region. Today, by most estimates, there are at least 200 and the managers of the biggest ones in Erbil and Suleimaniya say their memberships have soared by more than 70 per cent in the last three years.

Kurdish bodybuilder, Sardar Ismael participated at the 2012 Men’s World Amateur Bodybuilding Championship which was organized by The World Amateur Body Building Association (WABBA).

He secured first place in the Small Men Category and won a gold medal in the championship. Exhilarating the Iraqi and Kurdish people, Ismail was selected by the organizers as the overall winner of the championship.

Last year, another Kurdish athlete, Nazar Ahmad Hussein took part in the 2013 Men’s World Amateur Bodybuilding Championships.

He secured first place in the Small Men Category and took a gold medal at the Championships. To the great joy of the Kurdish people, Hussein was also selected by the organizers as the Championships? overall winner.”
