Bodybuilding is a sport dominated by the biggest, freakiest athletes on the planet, and there aren’t many athletes stalking the IFBB stage that are bigger or freakier than Maxx Charles. Since he first exploded onto the scene back in 2008 by winning the overall at the NPC Eastern USA Championships, Charles has been a touted as a future top-10 Olympia competitor.
After narrowly missing out on his pro card in 2011 and 2012, with close finishes at the top of the Super Heavyweight class, Charles left no doubt at the 2013 USA’s who the best athlete in show was, dominating the stage with an overwhelming amount of hard, dense muscle and a devastating hands on hip most muscular shot that is still among the best in the sport. Last year, in his rookie season, Charles competed twice on the IFBB stage at the New York and Tampa Pro shows, where he placed 4th and 5th respectively, showing flashes of potential greatness.
The knock on Maxx Charles has always been that his legs pale in comparison to his hulking upper body, but after years of hearing heavy criticism regarding his lower half, Charles put his nose to the grindstone this offseason and has made some serious improvements. If he’s managed to make enough improvements and balance out his physique a bit, we could very easily see him do some serious damage here in 2015.
