The Phil Heath Classic went down over the weekend, and while the show churned out its fair share of good competitors, the most impressive person to take the stage last weekend was the man himself. Despite what seems like an endless travel schedule that has taken him across three continents since winning his last Olympia title, not only has Heath managed to put in some serious work, but he still appears to be getting better.
Phil took the stage looking absolutely ridiculous, showing off a level of offseason conditioning that Lionel Beyeke would be proud to bring in come contest time. For all of the talk about the how many Olympia titles are in Justin Compton’s future, Roelly Winklar’s gut, and Arnold’s critical comments that have dominated the headlines early on this season, somehow the fact that Phil appears to be in a one man race against history has managed to become both overlooked and underappreciated. Maybe we should all pause for a moment and stop trying to anoint the coming of the “chosen one”, and realize that the current king of the sport could very well end his career as the most dominant athlete to ever grace the stage.
